Accessibility
Accessibility statement
We want memStock LifeStyle to be usable by as many readers as possible, including people who use assistive technology. This page explains what we aim for, what we have checked and where we know the site still falls short.
Our goal
We use the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), as the working standard for how we design, build and test the site. It is a target we work toward. We do not claim that every page meets every success criterion.
This statement covers the English edition of memStock LifeStyle at media.memstock.com/en. It does not cover the Japanese edition or the other websites listed under known limitations.
What we have done
- Keyboard access: the menu, search, the table of contents in each guide, the frequently asked questions and the featured guides on the home page can be used with a keyboard. A “Skip to content” link moves focus to the main content.
- Visible focus: links, buttons and form fields show an outline when you reach them with the keyboard.
- Color contrast: we checked our main text and link colors against their backgrounds and aim for a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for regular text.
- Text alternatives: we aim to give images that carry information alt text. Photos that repeat a nearby headline are designed to be treated as decorative so that screen readers skip them.
- Headings: pages are designed to have one main heading, with heading levels in order, so that you can move through a page by its headings.
- Zoom and reflow: pages are designed to remain readable when zoomed to 200% and at a width of 320 CSS pixels, without scrolling sideways.
- Reduced motion: if your device is set to reduce motion, the site is designed to stop the featured guides on the home page from rotating automatically and to turn off animations.
- Rotating content: the featured guides at the top of the home page change every 15 seconds. A pause button stops the rotation, and you can choose a guide yourself.
- Touch targets: we aim for links and buttons of at least 24 by 24 CSS pixels, and larger targets for the main controls.
How we evaluated the site
Our most recent evaluation was completed on . We ran automated checks with axe-core, using its rules for WCAG 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 at Levels A and AA, at screen widths of 320, 375 and 1280 CSS pixels. The checks covered the main types of page: the home page, a guide, guide lists, categories, topics, search, About us, our editorial policy, this statement and the page shown when an address is not found.
We also checked by hand: keyboard operation and focus order, the heading structure, zoom, reduced motion and the pause control for the featured guides. The automated checks reported no violations on the pages we tested. Automated tools detect only some kinds of barrier, and our tests used sample content on a test version of the site rather than every published guide.
Known limitations
- We have not yet tested the site with screen readers such as VoiceOver or NVDA, with high-contrast settings, or on a wide range of real devices. We checked 200% zoom by scaling the page rather than with each browser’s own zoom control.
- When an English address is not found, the HTML that our server sends first does not declare the page language. The language is set to English once the page finishes loading in the browser. This comes from how the framework we use builds that page, and we are looking for a way to fix it.
- Our editors write the alt text for images inside each guide. We have not yet reviewed every image in every published guide.
- Some pages we link to are run by other services and are outside this statement: our contact form (Google Forms), our privacy policy on the memStock support site, the photographers’ pages on Unsplash that we credit, and the external sources cited in our guides.
Tell us about a barrier
If you have trouble using any part of the site, or you need information from a guide in another format, please tell us through our contact form. Include the page address and a short description of the problem.
If you cannot use the form, email us at support@memstock.com instead. We review accessibility feedback and use it to decide what to fix first. We cannot promise a specific response time.
