How we work

Our editorial policy

You should be able to see where a guide’s information comes from, how it was checked and how to tell us when something is wrong.

From a question to a guide

Our process has four stages: identify a reader’s question, research the relevant evidence, prepare a draft and review it for publication. Editors review facts, numbers, sources and wording before a guide is published. No review process catches every error, so please tell us if you find one.

Research and sources

We prioritize primary sources, such as government publications, original research and official program documentation. For figures and rules, we check the claim, its source URL and the date or period it applies to. When we cannot verify a number, we try not to publish it.

Guides generally link to their sources so you can review the underlying information. Estimates and examples are labeled as such, with their assumptions explained. An example is not a measured result, and a researched guide is not a claim that we have personally tested every suggestion.

AI assistance and human review

We use AI to organize research and prepare drafts. An editor reviews each draft and decides whether to publish it. Human review reduces errors, but it does not guarantee that every article or every statement is accurate, complete or current.

Specialist review

A “Reviewed by” credit is shown only after specialist review has been completed and its date and scope have been recorded. A reviewer assignment alone is not a completed review. Articles without that credit have had editorial review only. A reviewer’s involvement is not a guarantee that a guide fits every reader’s circumstances.

Health and money topics

Our health and family money guides provide general educational information. They are not medical or financial advice, and they do not replace guidance from a qualified professional familiar with your situation. They are not a diagnosis, a treatment plan or a personalized investment recommendation.

For decisions about your health, treatment, taxes, insurance or investments, consult an appropriately qualified professional. Check current official guidance and the rules that apply in your state. Guides in our Parenting and Family Money sections, and guides with a completed specialist review, show a short notice to this effect before the article begins.

Updates and corrections

When we identify an error, we correct the article. When a correction changes a figure, a rule or a conclusion, we add a note at the end of the article in this example format (this is not a correction to a specific guide):

Correction (October 20, 2026): An earlier version of this guide gave the wrong age limit. It has been corrected.

The date is the day the correction was made. Minor spelling and wording changes do not normally receive a separate correction note.

Publication and update dates help you assess how current a guide is. An update date reflects a change to the article’s content, rather than a new page view.
